Newsletter N. 1

Dear Scij-Friends, this newsletter is the first of a series that will get us closer to the 60th SCIJ Meeting in “Ponte di Legno – Passo del Tonale”, a wonderful location 140 km northeast of Milan, from 9th to 16th March 2013.

This year it was a little bit more complicate than usual, and that is why we're coming out with this first essential informations only now. We apologize about it, but everything was fixed for the Meeting only few days ago.

Anyway we are proud and happy to see you again on the italian Alps, and sure that you will appreciate Ponte di Legno and his wonderful mountains of Adamello chain, with his perennial glacier, that will be the teather of our competitions. For sure,  italian GIS is doing his best to make this 60th Scij International Meeting a succesful one.

Ciao a tutti, e benvenuti in Italia.

Mario Sensini

 GIS President

Dear Friends,

Rarely in the history of SCIJ has an international meeting had such a difficult and complicated birth. And rarely have we had such demonstration of how we depend on the enthusiasm and illingness of our members to overcome all barriers, even to move mountains... for in the organisation of this meeting they did indeed have to move mountains when our original choice of resort proved impossible to arrange.

So I must warmly  thank all those responsible at the station of Ponte di Legno / Passo del Tonale, who have put everything in place to welcome 230 journalists from around the world, in record time. The sixtieth international meeting of SCIJ will take place in the magnificent Camonica Valley, straddling the provinces of Lombardy and Trentino. It promises to be another really great meeting, thanks also to the fantastic dedication of our Italian section.  How lucky we are to have such great resources and such remarkable people, ready to put all their passion and energy at the disposal of others, with such wonderful results.

In a few days you will have the pleasure and privilege to explore this beautiful mountain setting. It is the magic of SCIJ that each year we discover new places, new slopes, new culture and cuisine, and above all, new friends. This rich diversity is our heritage as members of SCIJ. It is our duty to cherish and preserve this club and its spirit, and ensure that it has a bright future for many years to come.

Miguel Aquiso

SCIJ President

Chers amis,

Adamello Ski Resort

(Pontedilegno, Passo Tonale, Temù and Presena glacier)

Adamello Ski is one of the most appreciated ski resorts in the Alps. It is set between Lombardia (Upper Valle Camonica) and Trentino (Upper Val di Sole) and has its heart in Ponte di Legno-Tonale, whose name has always been synonymous of holiday in the snow, in the pure nature of the national Stelvio Park and of the Adamello Park.

Ski runs

More than 100 km of ski runs, 30 lifts, abundance of snow on all tracks, are waiting for our Scij meeting.

The ski runs in Ponte di Legno are linked to those of Temù, very broad and with a panoramic view. A gondola will get us from Ponte di Legno to Passo Tonale in about 15 minutes. Another cableway takes us to Presena Glacier at 3.000 metres above sea level with challenging tracks and slopes where the ski season continues until late Spring.

In the Adamello Ski resort we will enjoy one of the longest ski runs in Europe: from 3.000 mt of Presena Glacier to 1.250 mt of Pontedilegno, 11 km of great ski and fun.

Cross-country

We’ll have several tracks for the cross-country: at Passo Tonale by the school Monticelli and at Ponte di Legno where we can practice. In both places, with respectively 5 km and 3.5 km of tracks, we’ll find teachers and rentals. Cross-country skiing is possible also in a nice place in the woods next to a stream with 10 km of tracks and a ski school with rental service (Val Sozzine).

Free Time in the snow

Other sports can help us appreciate nature, its wide spaces and its silence. A walk with snowshoes will project you in a magic and muffled atmosphere. On a sledge hauled by the husky dogs of Armen Khatchikian’s Sleddog School at Passo Tonale you will experience a truly unique adventure.

Out of the classic routes we can enjoy some of the most spectacular offpistes of the Alps (Pisgana, Cantiere, Vescasa), ski tours on the Adamello-Presanella mountains and also icefalls. With the Alpine Guides you’ll be able to enjoy yourself safely.

When the sun goes down

As we know, the day in the snow usually ends in the most fashionable places for a drink and then continues until late at night in the discos and pubs where, for sure, we’ll enjoy the night together.

Cousine

Last but not least: Valle Camonica and Val di Sole have different gastronomic traditions. The Upper Val di Sole is famous for its speck, canederli, smoked pork and sauerkraut and also for its traditional sweets. The typical dishes of the Upper Valle Camonica are “calsù” (stuffed ravioli), barley soup, venison with polenta, lamb ham and a variety of cows and goat cheeses.

And, of course, in Italy you can’t dine without taste wine. The Val di Sole boasts the renowned wines produced in the region Trentino while in the Valle Camonica there are six wine cellars producing wine. Their wines Valcamonica white and red, Marzemino and Merlot have reached the national standards that grant them the IGT classification.

Shopping

You will find in the pedestrian area and in the square of Ponte di Legno, the perfect place for society life, a wide choice of shops ranging from typical products to high fashion. After the appetizer you will be spoiled for choice between the many restaurants where you can eat local typical dishes.
